Temperature is an Attribute and Mechanic in Outward, representing the player's body temperature. If the player becomes too Hot hot or too Cold cold, they will suffer various penalties, or even receive Defeat Scenarios.

Penalties

See Needs: Hot and Needs: Cold for details about the negative effects of Temperature.

Managing Temperature

ManagingTempCampfire

A player warms up by a Campfire.

Players can manage their temperature in a variety of ways. They may employ special clothing, eat particular consumables, or make use of environmental features.

  • Cities and most dungeons are neutral temperature, allowing the player to warm up or cool down.
  • The player has "Cold Weather Def." and "Hot Weather Def." stats. A positive stat will provide protection from the elements, delaying or preventing penalties. Negative stats will do the opposite, and is common with heavy Armor.
    • A player can increase these stats with Equipment, as well as Effects and Skills (see below)
    • A positive Hot Weather Def stat will not reduce your resistance to the Cold, and vice versa. Only negative stats have this effect
    • The stats are represented by the HotWeather and Cold Weather icons in the players Equipment screen

Other

  • Campfires, either from a Campfire Kit or naturally occurring fires, will passively increase the player's temperature if they are close enough. Note that standing by a fire for too long may lead to the player becoming too Hot hot as well.
  • Makeshift Torch will provide Hot warmth
  • Ice-Flame Torch will Cold cool the player down
  • Mystic Fire Imbue will slightly increase the player's temperature

Weather

Different regions in Aurai have different temperatures when the player is outdoors. This is the most significant way in which the player's Temperature is affected.

In all regions, it becomes notably colder during the night. Daytime is 5am to 9:59pm, and Nighttime is between 10pm to 4:59am.

Rain can occur during all seasons, in all regions except Abrassar, and will result in the Wet status effect.

Some regions in Outward also have seasons, which generally last between 15 and 20 days. However, a Season will not change until you leave the exterior region and re-enter (for example, entering and leaving a City).

The current regional temperature is visible from the Map screen near the time of day, described as an adjective:

  • Hot Hottest (+40 Hotter)
  • Hot Very Hot (+20 Hotter)
  • Neutral (+/- 0)
  • Cold Fresh (-14 or -15 Colder)
  • Cold Very Cold (-30 Colder)
  • Cold Coldest: (-45 Colder)

Chersonese

ConfluxMountainView

The Conflux Mountain covered in Snow from a Chersonese winter

Chersonese has the most dynamic weather system of the four regions, with a unique Snowing effect which occurs during Winter.

Autumn

Daytime: +/- 0 (Neutral). Nighttime: -14 Cold (Fresh).

  • The player will begin in Autumn, and starts a few days into the season.
  • Rain is common in Autumn.

Winter

Daytime: -30 Cold (Very Cold). Nighttime: -45 Cold (Coldest).

  • The first Winter can occur as early as day 12, or as late as day 17.
  • Spawn behavior of most outdoor enemies, such as Hyena and Pearlbird, is observably reduced.
  • It will begin to snow, greatly reducing the outdoor temperature.

Spring

Daytime: +/- 0 (Neutral). Nighttime: -14 Cold (Fresh).

  • The first Spring can occur as early as day 27, or as late as day 40.
  • Snow clears over the course of a few days.

Spring / Autumn

Daytime: +/- 0 (Neutral). Nighttime: -14 Cold (Fresh).

  • The game begins in the normal season, which is Neutral in the daytime and Cold Fresh (-14) at night.
  • Rain is still fairly common during the normal season

  • A foggy (or Ancestral) season begins after 15-20 days, which sees much lower daytime temperatures, and even colder night temperatures.

Abrassar

Abrassar does not have dynamic seasons. Daytime: +40 Hot (Very Hot / Hottest). Nighttime: -20 Cold (Cold).
