CraftingMenu

The crafting menu.

Crafting involves the use of recipes to create new items and equipment. It is one of the key features of the game Outward. With the crafting system, you will make new equipment or consumables, deconstruct items and even refuel your lantern. You can purchase recipes from merchants or loot them from chests, caches or fallen enemies. You can also discover them on your own by experimenting with ingredients. This can lead to wasted ingredients in the case of cooking and alchemy, however, so be sure to have plenty of spares when going it alone!

Crafting Basics

You can use crafting to make equipment or consumables.

  • Crafting equipment does not require a crafting station and uses one or more Components to produce items that are generally permanent.
  • In order to make most consumables, such as potions or food, you must use either a coking pot or an alchemy kit. Crafting a consumable require ingredients that can be looted, fished, gathered or purchased. There are a few cases where a consumable is crafted without the use of a crafting station, most notably Trip Wire Traps and arrows.

You can experiment with crafting using the "Manual Recipe" option or choose from your list of known recipes. If you are missing ingredients, your recipe of choice will be in the "Missing Ingredients" section and you will not be able to craft the recipe. Get out there and harvest!

Once you have all of the required ingredients and have already learned the recipe, you'll be able to choose from the list of craftable items. If using "Manual Recipe", you'll know if your attempt has failed when you receive the message "Invalid Combination".

NOTE - When cooking, this may result in food waste and one of your ingredients being consumed.

Obtaining Recipes

Recipes can be obtained several different ways:

  • Purchasing from a merchant is the easiest, though most expensive, way to obtain a specific recipe.
  • Looting from chests, caches, or fallen enemies will sometimes drop recipes, though this appears to be rare.
  • Manual crafting using the "Manual Recipe" option in the crafting menu represents experimentation with ingredients.

Item Creation

With crafting, you can create useful items and equipment. The things you can craft generally fall into two basic categories: equipment and consumables. While most equipment will not need a crafting station, most consumables will need either a campfire, cooking pot or alchemy kit. Some equipment can only be crafted by a smith.

To begin crafting, enter the crafting menu using the appropriate hotkey or by activating a crafting station. You then must either choose "Manual Recipe" or select a known recipe that you have all ingredients/components for. Some recipes will allow substitutions of ingredients. This mostly applies to cooking dishes such as Ocean Fricassee; instead of a specific fish, you can use any fish or fish based dish (though the latter may not be intentional.)
