Crafting involves the use of recipes to create new items and equipment. It is one of the key features of the game Outward. With the crafting system, you will make new equipment or consumables, deconstruct items and even refuel your lantern. You can purchase recipes from merchants or loot them from chests, caches or fallen enemies. You can also discover them on your own by experimenting with ingredients. This can lead to wasted ingredients in the case of cooking and alchemy, however, so be sure to have plenty of spares when going it alone!

*Purchasing from a merchant is the easiest, though most expensive, way to obtain a specific recipe.

With crafting, you can create useful items and equipment. The things you can craft generally fall into two basic categories: equipment and consumables. While most equipment will not need a crafting station, most consumables will need either a campfire, cooking pot or alchemy kit. Some equipment can only be crafted by a smith.<!--This may need to be verified-->

* Decrafting - from the survival crafting menu, players can decraft certain items into base materials.

Recipe Scrolls
To begin crafting, enter the crafting menu using the appropriate hotkey or by activating a crafting station. You then must either choose "Manual Recipe" or select a known recipe that you have all ingredients/components for. Some recipes will allow substitutions of ingredients. This mostly applies to cooking dishes such as Ocean Fricassee; instead of a specific fish, you can use any fish or fish based dish (though the latter may not be intentional.)

Recipe scrolls can be found in the world or bought from merchants. Reading a recipe scroll for an item gives the player the recipe. However, this is not necessary — a player can simply place the correct items in the Manual Recipe section to achieve the same result, as well as unlocking the recipe for future crafting.

Not all recipes have an associated scroll. In this case, the recipe can only be discovered through trial and error, or by knowing the recipe in advance.

The Survival Crafting Menu

Crafting is a major gameplay mechanic in Outward which allows the player to create items ranging from Equipment to Food, Drinks, Imbues and many other items.

Overview

To craft items, the player can either select a known recipe, or manually craft a new one through trial and error or by knowing the recipe in advance.

The Survival Crafting menu is accessible at any time, and requires no station to craft items. For Cooking and Alchemy, the player will need the required station to see their recipes or attempt any crafting.

Failed Recipes

For Cooking and Alchemy when experimenting with manual recipes, it is possible to lose ingredients if the recipe is invalid. For Cooking you will receive Food Waste in this situation, but with alchemy the items are destroyed and you receive nothing.

This does not apply to Survival Crafting, so you can safely experiment with any Survival Crafting manual recipes and not worry about losing ingredients (unless you make a recipe you did not expect to).

Recipes

A Recipe refers to the knowledge of how to craft an item (ie. which ingredients it has, and which station). Once the player crafts the recipe the first time, it will be learned and added to the list of known recipes, which are displayed in the relevant Crafting menu. Certain items may have more than one recipe.

There are currently

recipes defined on the Outward Wiki.

Other types of Recipes defined on the Outward Wiki include:

 • Blacksmiths - these NPCs can craft armor sets and weapons for the player if they bring them the appropriate materials, though the player does not craft these themselves.
 • Decrafting - from the survival crafting menu, players can decraft certain items into base materials.

Recipe Scrolls

Recipe scrolls can be found in the world or bought from merchants. Reading a recipe scroll for an item gives the player the recipe. However, this is not necessary — a player can simply place the correct items in the Manual Recipe section to achieve the same result, as well as unlocking the recipe for future crafting.

Not all recipes have an associated scroll. In this case, the recipe can only be discovered through trial and error, or by knowing the recipe in advance.
